Quick trip to Yemen – Part 3

Ok, so finally got a little time to finally tell the story I’ve been promising.  This small village on the top of the hill called “Baytbous”, was there back in the day when Yemen was a Jewish country.  Islam reached the village on the top which converted to Islam, and the bottom village remained Jewish.  The water collection system, or well was at the bottom village, which remained Jewish at the time.  They lived in peace until the top village converted, the bottom village did not want them to get to the source of the water.  What did the other village do? they dug a hole, under the ground and through the stone, to reach the water in the bottom.  Today only 10 families remain there, and now they are Muslims  but the top village is mostly empty with the exception of a few houses.  There will be pictures below.

This is the well, or water collection place, usually rain water collects, and that’s used for washing and I think cooking.

This is a room where they stored corn, wheat, rice and other dry store-able food goods.

This was the main market, at the top village. It was mostly Jewelers, as many Jews were famous with silver jewelery making.

The remains of a house. The door was really small, makes me wonder how tiny our ancestors were :)
